About

Qawwali Ensemble

Hamza Akram Qawwal and his brothers Taimoor Akram and Abdul Akram are most prominently identified with their contribution to the Qawwali genre.

Awarded the Best Emerging Talent at the 2017 Lux Style Awards, Hamza Akram Qawwal is the second Qawwal after the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to compose music for films. He shares a keen passion for educating and spreading awareness about the genre of Qawwali to both national and international crowds through workshops, classes, and performances.

Hamza Akram and his brothers belong to the 26th generation of Qawwals from Qawwal Bachon ka Delhi Gharana - an 805-year-old tradition that was founded by Ustad Saamat bin Ibrahim Khan Sahib (the first student of Hz. Amir Khusro and the first Qawwal of the subcontinent).

Boasting 6 Presidential awards (Pride of Performance, Tamgha e initiaz), this particular gharana includes prominent figures such as Ustad Tanras Khansahab (the court musician/teacher of Bahadur Shah Zafar). Ustad Munshi Raziuddin (paternal grandfather), Ustad Qawwal Bahauddin (maternal Grandfather), Ustad Naseeruddin Saami, and Ustad Fareed Ayaz Qawwal.

Hamza and his brothers received early training in Eastern classical music from Ustad Naseeruddin Saami (his paternal uncle) and Qawwali from Ustad Fareed Ayaz Qawwal (paternal uncle).

An international artist in his own right, Hamza's most famous works include the track "Lover's Eye" (a collaboration with Damien Lazarus also featuring Ustad Fareed Ayaz Qawwal), Rangreza and Dil Paradesi Ho Gaya to name a few.

They became the first Pakistani artist to be recorded at the headquarters of the world's biggest microphone company SHURE, and are acclaimed one of the most toured young bands from Pakistan.
